Bhardwaj writes a book on Nehru

Bhardwaj has written a book on India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, titled Nehru: Gazing at Tomorrow.

In a season of tell-all books by those associated with the UPA regime, a one-time law minister and confidante of the Gandhi family, H R Bhardwaj, has written a book on India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, titled Nehru: Gazing at Tomorrow.

Not just the writing, Bhardwaj has also got his collars and identity card ready for the court. He does not talk about his party but says he will always remain a “fan of Nehru”. Written during his stint as Karnataka Governor, the book is set to be released by Vice President Hamid Ansari today. The slim book purports to be current in its political ideas but does not mention the current situation involving the Congress, the BJP or PM Narendra Modi by name at all. Bhardwaj writes that his objective is to “remind the younger generation that we have inherited such a strong legacy and all we need to do is improve it, not shun it or suffocate it”.

Through expansion of educational institutions, science and by nurturing a secular and plural India, Nehru put India on the path it finds itself on in this century, writes Bhardwaj.

The Congress is preparing to mark 125 years of Nehru this November but the party has distanced itself from the book as Bhardwaj has quoted from a letter Nehru wrote to all the chief ministers in 1961. Nehru spoke of the need to not rely on “reservations on communal and caste basis, (as) we swamp the bright and able people and remain second-rate or third-rate”. Worried that this could start a controversy around the party and its approach to reservations, the Congress spokesman distanced himself and the party from the book on Monday.

“I have written a chapter on social justice in which I have quoted a letter that Nehru wrote. No empowerment of any section of society is possible with just reservation. We must offer opportunities,” Bhardwaj said.
