Given the bitter relations between the Opposition and the treasury benches in the previous Lok Sabha,Government on Friday extended an olive branch to the other side ahead of the first session of the newly-constituted lower House.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Bansal,who took charge of the ministry as a Cabinet minister,assured the opposition that the government will give full consideration to its viewpoint and sought cooperation in the smooth running of Parliament.
Bansal told PTI that it was the equal responsibility of the government and the opposition to run Parliament as all parties put together should come up to the expectations of the people.
He said that a discussion is yet to start on the issue of electing a new Speaker and Deputy Speaker and maintained that Congress has always respected healthy traditions.
The election of the Speaker is scheduled on June three after the oath of affirmation by members on June 1 and 2.
The session will be starting on June 1 and would conclude on June 9. President Pratibha Patil’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament is scheduled for June 4. Later,both the Houses will have discussion on the motion of thanks to the President for her address.
