Assembly resumes after five days of disruption

The Assembly resumed functioning Monday after five days of disruption as opposition members protested the controversial remarks of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar last week.

The time lost due to disruptions forced the government to clear the budgetary demands of 11 important departments in a hurry. The demands,valued at over Rs 2,700 crore,were cleared without MLAs being given time to speak.

Opposition Leader Eknath Khadse requested the Speaker to increase the time for discussion but it was turned down and a miffed Opposition walked out of the proceedings.

The budgetary demands of Home,Revenue,Agriculture,School Education,Public Works Department,Housing Department,Environment,Cooperative,Higher and Technical Education,Womens and Child Development and Tourism were cleared with only the ruling benches being occupied.

The budget session,which started March 11,has been marred by controversies and frequent disruptions. Of the 26 functioning days,it has lost around eight due to disruptions and holidays.
