Social activist Anna Hazare has written to a road contractor asking him to “take action” against activists and villagers protesting against the continuation of toll collection at a toll plaza on the Shikrapur-Chakan road. Hazare claims the protesters are misusing his name to garner support.
The contractor has now approached the police and revenue officials using Hazare’s letter, asking them to act.
On the other hand, the protesters, who are from the neighbouring Shirur taluka, said they had met Hazare in Ralegan Siddhi before starting their protest and he had given them “his blessings”, while expressing his inability to physically participate as he was preoccupied with his movement against the land Bill.
The protesters believe the toll was supposed to stop in 2012. However, they alleged the government “unnecessarily” gave multiple extensions giving the contractor financial benefit.
