Punjab MP gets security cover for Kashmir sarpanches,panches

The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission has granted security cover to around 35,000 sarpanches and panches of J&K while hearing a plea in this regard by a Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab.

All India in-charge Human Rights Cell (BJP),Avinash Rai Khanna — who is a Rajya Sabha MP and belongs to Hoshiarpur in Punjab — had filed a petition in the commission seeking protection to the sarpanches and panches of J&K on April 20.

He had submitted that terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba had threatened all sarpanches and panches of the state to resign from their posts or face consequences.

“It was an attack on the three-tier system of democracy and such things cannot be accepted in a country like India — the largest democracy of the world. Therefore,I demanded protection for them from the human rights commission,” Khanna said.

After hearing his plea,the commission,on July 4,had directed the Inpector General of Police (IGP) and Director General of Police (DGP),Kashmir to provide security to around 35,000 sarpanches and panches. A copy of the petition was also forwarded to the police chief for the further action by the commission. “I had also written to the then Home Minister P Chidambaram to look into the matter,” said Khanna.
