Aggreived at justice eluding the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots for the last 28 years,Lok Raj Sangthan and senior advocate H S Phoolka have decided to hold a Peoples Court on November 3 in New Delhi to highlight the experience of the relatives of the riots victims.
Noted legal luminaries, who retired holding top positions are being requested to be a part of the exercise, where they would listen to the victims in a symbolic court. We are trying to rope in Justices Hosbet Suresh,V R Krishna Iyer and A P Shah among others for the Peoples Court. We already had talks with a couple of retired judges on the issue and are waiting to see how things shape up, Lok Raj Sangthan (Delhi) Secretary Birju Naik said.
A former Bombay High Court judge,Justice Suresh and former Supreme Court judge,Justice V R Krishna Iyer were part of Indian Peoples Tribunal fact finding team that went to Gujarat after communal riots were triggered by the Godhra train attack. The team had gathered more than 2,000 oral and written testimonies. Former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court,Justice A P Shah, had decriminalised homosexuality in a July 2009 ruling. We are in the process of identifying and then finalising the families who would attend the Peoples Court on November 3. The idea is to express resentment,as justice continues to elude the families of the riots victims, said Naik.
In Amritsar, advocate H S Phoolka said they were planning to display 3,000 turbans at the India Gate or Jantar Mantar in Delhi on the 29th anniversary of 1984 riots in November. We will write the name of victims below each of the turbans. Today,we met Akal Takht chief Giani Gurbachan Singh to discuss the issue and ensure that Maryada was not violated in the process, Phoolka said.
He added: Out of over 500 cases pertaining to the 1984 riots, trial is on in only five cases and rest have been closed.
