Orphans may be included in OBC list,says Centre

The Centre may include the orphans and destitute children in the list of Other Backward Classes so that they could avail the benefit of reservation in educational institutions and jobs,Hoshiarpur MP Avinash Rai Khanna said on Tuesday.

The Centre may include the orphans and destitute children in the list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) so that they could avail the benefit of reservation in educational institutions and jobs,Hoshiarpur MP Avinash Rai Khanna said on Tuesday.

He said the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment revealed this in a letter to him after he sought information pertaining to orphans in the government and non-government orphanages in the country.

Union Minister of State D Napoleon has written: “Reservation in posts and services pertaining to orphans and destitute children falls under the purview of the state governments… states such as Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan have issued directions to include them in the list of OBCs allowing them to avail the benefits of reservation.”

The practice has been brought to the notice of other state governments with a request to take similar action,the minister said.
