The spotting of a female leopard and her two newborns sent alarm bells ringing at Harkul village near Mangaon in Raigad district on Friday afternoon.

Forest officials from Roha division said the female had delivered the cubs in the village. “After the sarpanch reported presence of the cats,we cordoned off the area. We have told the villagers not to disturb the leopard as she has just delivered, and people are cooperating,” said Sarfaraz Khan,Deputy Conservator of Forests,Roha.

Forest officials have assured panicked villagers that the leopard won’t attack them as she has just delivered. “She is more interested in taking care of her young ones than attacking anyone. She’ll attack only if provoked,” said Khan.

The forest department has no plans as of now to tranquilize the animals and hope the cats will return to the wild soon. “It is our duty to protect the female and her newborns. We are expecting her to return to the forest soon on her own,” said Khan.
