1 cop among 11 injured in clashes in parts of the valley

Protests continue for the fourth day in Kashir valley over the death of a teenager in police action on Sunday.

Eleven persons, including a policeman, were injured as mobs protesting the death of a teenager in police action, hurled stones at security personnel in different parts of the valley for the fourth day on Thursday prompting them to burst tear-gas shells to disperse them.

While clashes broke out between stone-pelting mobs and security personnel in uptown city resulting in injuries to eight persons,Baramulla was witness to intense confrontations as police had to use tear-gas shells and batons there to quell the protests which left three persons including a policeman injured, official sources said.

A woman and her two kids were also among the injured in the clashes at different places in uptown city including Rawalpora,Maisuma and Karan Nagar, they said, adding, they were injured as the stones smashed the rear screen of their car.

Reports of clashes between angry youth and police were also reported from Pattan,Narbal and Baramulla district town in North Kashmir,Sheerpora-Anantnag and Pampore-Pulwama in South and Raipur Chadoora in Central Kashmir, they said.

They said the clashes in Baramulla town were intense where police fired teargas shells and used batons to chase away the stone-pelting protestors. Three persons including a policeman were injured in the day-long clashes, the sources added.

The sources said the situation was by and large peaceful in the city today as authorities deployed police and paramilitary personnel with a directive to strictly enforce prohibitory orders leading to a curfew-like situation in most parts of interior city.

However, locals alleged that curfew was imposed in most parts of downtown Srinagar and they were not allowed even to buy milk or bread for children in the morning. The restrictions on the movement of the people in the interior city coincided with the fourth day ceremony of the slain boy Wamik Farooq,a seventh class student who fell to a teargas shell at Rajouri Kadal in interior city on Sunday.

Fearing trouble during the prayers, the authorities also placed several separatist leaders including chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq under house arrest besides sending three senior leaders – Shabir Ahmad Shah,Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Firdous Ahmad Shah – behind the bars.

Residents claimed that Police vans fitted with public address system went round the city this morning announcing imposition of curfew. “We are not being allowed to move out of our houses as policemen announced imposition of curfew from 7 AM”,a resident of old city Abdul Qayoom said.

However,a police spokesman said curfew has not been imposed in any part of the city but prohibitory orders have been enforced strictly. In civil lines area, barring Batmaloo,Maisuma,Basant Bagh and Gaw Kadal, there was no restrictions on the movement of the people, the sources said adding police fired a few teargas shells to chase away a group of youth who tried to stage violent protest at Maisuma this evening.

All shops and business establishments remained shut, while transport was off the road for the fourth day in the city
