All Patidar leaders, except Hardik Patel, booked for sedition by the Ahmedabad crime branch and Surat police, were granted bail on Thursday.

While Chirag Patel, Ketan Patel and Dinesh Bambhania, booked by the Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch, were granted relief by the High Court after they submitted an undertaking against participating in any agitation, Vipul Desai and Chirag Desai were given bail by the Surat district court. Investigations by Surat police found that the two were “not involved” in any seditious activity.

Chirag Patel, Ketan and Dinesh — core members of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti — were arrested in October last year along with Hardik for allegedly inciting violence to mount pressure on the government to accept the demand of reservations for the Patidar community.

In the High Court, Justice A J Desai allowed the petitions of the three Hardik aides after the government said it has no objection in view of their written undertaking before the sessions court, which had rejected their bail pleas.

On the other hand, Hardik’s bail plea was argued at length in the same court. During the hearing, when the court asked if Hardik would proceed on agitation again if granted bail, his lawyers said that “he will protest under the constitutional frame up since he is the leader of a community”. The state government is likely to oppose the bail plea on May 3.
