EVEN AS PPCC vice president Sunil Jakhar maintains that he has no grudge over not getting a berth in the Rajya Sabha, he said on Thursday that there were ‘not enough advocates for farmers in Parliament.’
The PPCC spokesperson, who was in Bathinda Thursday, added, “Not only AAP or SAD, but also Congress is not having enough voices for farmers in Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. The issues related to farmers are not being articulated properly in both the houses and I think there is a lack of representatives of farmers in the Parliament.”
However, when asked if he was upset for not getting a nomination for Rajya Sabha, he said, “There is nothing of that sort. However, I genuinely feel that issues of farmers should be raised in Parliament so as to resolve the agrarian crisis.”

He spoke about the recent statement of Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh where he stated that MSP hike alone cannot increase farmers’ income, instead farmers need to diversify themselves into livestock, fishery etc. The government could move away from large hikes in support prices, Singh hinted at New Delhi on Wednesday.
Jakhar said, “This statement is really annoying. The NDA government has already brought a meagre hike in MSP and they are in a mood to stop that as well. This needs to be condemned and I will suggest the Captain Amarinder Singh to show black flags to PM Narendra Modi during his visit to Chandigarh on International Yoga Day on June 21. He needs to be gheraoed for such anti-farmer stance.”
