With Assam already in poll mode, the BJP Thursday suffered a major blow when the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council slipped out of its hands with its Chief Executive Member Niranjan Hojai stepping down and paving the way for the Congress to take over the Council.
The resignation of Hojai, a former militant who joined the BJP last year after being elected to the Council as an Independent, came a day after BJP national president Amit Shah claimed that his party was set to oust the Congress in the upcoming Assembly polls.
His resignation came a few hours before a no-confidence motion was slated against him. His exit has made the road clear for Congress to take control of the Council.
