Veteran BJP leader L K Advani on Monday said the Dalits have been suffering atrocities for a long time and it is natural to lament the mistreatment meted out to them. “Atrocities on Dalits is not today’s phenomenon. It is natural to express grief over the way the Dalits have been mistreated across the country,” he said, when asked about recent flogging of the Dalits at Una.
Advani, who is a Member of Parliament from Gandhinagar, was in Ahmedabad for the ongoing Tiranga Yatra and visited Sabarmati Ashram and a school during his visit. He praised the development works done by the BJP Government in the state.
“I am really happy to see the development of the art gallery and garden in Jodhpur municipality ward,” Advani told a gathering during the Tiranga Yatra. “It is a matter of great happiness to see unprecedented development works done in Karnawati (Ahmedabad) and in my constituency, first under the leadership of Narendra Modi and then by Anandiben Patel (who succeeded Modi as the CM),” Advani said. He also addressed the students of a municipal school where he talked about the origin of the tricolour.
Widespread protests have been raging amongst the Dalits ever since the Una flogginf incident in Gujarat. Opposition parties have tore into the BJP and frequently chided Prime Minister Modi to break his silence on the issue of rising cow vigilantism in the country.
Modi, in turn, said that 80 percent of Gau-Rakshaks are fake and condemned their activities. Modi’s remarks were met with criticism from the RSS and VHP.
