Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari has admitted a motion for a discussion on a speech delivered by Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh last July in which he had pitched for the removal of the word “Adhinayak” from the national anthem. The motion seeks Singh’s removal from his post.

The admission has been made as a “No-Day-Yet-Named Motion”, implying that no date has been fixed for taking it up.

The motion says: “That this House expresses its deep concern over the speech delivered by the Governor of Rajasthan at a public function in that state on 7th July, 2015, mentioning that the word ‘Adhinayak’ be removed from the national anthem because it was used by poet Rabindranath Tagore to appease British King George, the V, which was widely telecast and published in the electronic and print media on the 7th July, 2015, and on subsequent days and urges upon the President of India, through the Union Government of India, to withdraw his pleasure in respect of the Governor of Rajasthan from holding constitutional position.”

Soon after Singh had delivered the speech, TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy had written to President Pranab Mukherjee to plead with him “to initiate action” against Singh for denigrating the national anthem.

Singh, who was speaking at the 26th convocation ceremony of University of Rajasthan, had remarked that the word “Adhinayak” in the national anthem should be replaced with “mangal”, as it praised the British ruler (Angrezi shasak) of the time.”

Roy had called upon the President to take note of the remarks in a proper perspective and consider initiating such action as he deemed fit and proper, including Singh’s removal. “The statement of the Governor as circulated and telecast in the media seemed to be a veiled attempt to denigrate the national anthem of India,” Roy had said.
