Lucknow: Gangrape victim flees as accused’s kin try to ‘abduct’ her, reaches SSP office 3 days later

She was reportedly missing when the police called up the community health centre (CHC) where she gave birth, about the need to collect the baby’s blood sample for a DNA test to verify if the pregnancy was related to the crime.

A 24-YEAR-OLD married woman, who got pregnant after she was allegedly gangraped, fled the hospital with her newborn son on Saturday morning — hours after she gave birth, as her parents and the family of the rape accused reportedly tried to abduct her in Shikarpur area of Bulandshahr district.

She was reportedly missing when the police called up the community health centre (CHC) where she gave birth, about the need to collect the baby’s blood sample for a DNA test to verify if the pregnancy was related to the crime.

As the police started looking for her, the woman, along with her husband and child, visited Bulandshahr SSP Vaibhav Krishna on Monday evening, seeking security and lodged a complaint of attempt to kidnapping. “She alleged that her parents and relatives of the rape accused tried to kidnap her from the hospital. They reportedly fled after she raised an alarm. She claimed she left the hospital later and was now staying with her husband,” said the SSP. He added that the Shikarpur police has been asked to register an FIR into the matter.

Following a marital dispute with her husband, the woman stayed at her parents’ home till January. She returned to her husband after that. On February 27, she got an FIR lodged against former village pradhan Sanjay Sharma (42) and his associate Munesh Sharma (30), accusing them of raping her and getting her pregnant. Both were arrested in April and police filed a chargesheet in the case. While Munesh is at present out on bail, Sanjay Sharma is in jail.

On Friday morning, the woman, along with her two relatives, reached the Shikarpur CHC following labour pain. “A boy was delivered on Friday evening. The next morning, hospital staff found them missing,” said Dr Anjana Arora of the CHC.

Manoj Pathak — the SHO of Salempur police station where the woman had got the rape FIR lodged and the investigating officer of the case — said: “A team visited her parents and also her in-laws, but she could not be traced… Earlier, we had moved court seeking permission for further investigation in the gangrape case.”

When contacted, prime accused Sanjay Sharma’s younger brother Raj Kumar claimed the woman’s allegations of kidnapping attempt is false. “Police should contact the hospital to verify her allegations. Some people want to frame Sanjay and those helping him in fighting the case. Since after the woman got the case lodged, we have been requesting for a DNA test to verify her allegations,” he said.

“We had also moved the high court, which advised that the SSP be requested to hold a DNA test. The SSP, a month ago, had ordered the investigating officer to conduct the test… The woman left the hospital on her own,” he added. Her parents live at a distance of around 250 m from Sanjay Sharma’s house.

The village pradhan’s husband, Raja Ram Sharma, claimed the woman’s father had sought help of then village pradhan Sanjay Sharma to sort out her marital problems. “Initially, Sanjay Sharma arranged discussions between the couple, but the husband refused to stay with his wife. In January, Sanjay and the woman’s father dropped her at husband’s house. She had been staying with her husband since then,” he added.
