JNU row: Kanhaiya Kumar safest in jail, says Family

As JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail hearing was deferred to Wednesday, his family spent yet another harrowing day counting down to the next court hearing.

Kanhaiya’s elder brother Manikant Kumar and uncle Rajendra Singh spent the day glued to the lone television set in Ajoy Bhawan, the CPI’s headquarters in ITO, listening to debates on the JNU agitation. They said they feared for Kanhaiya’s safety.

“Even though we know he is innocent and should be released from jail at the earliest, most of our family members and friends feel he is safest in jail. With all the news stories about how he is likely to be attacked once he comes out, we think he is better off in prison. At least he is safe and sound there. We are thinking of putting in a request that he not be taken personally to court hearings any longer; he could appear via video conference instead. What if he is attacked once again,” said Manikant.

After meeting his younger brother Monday, Manikant said he and other well-wishers were “relieved he was fine and things were looking up. But now the police are set to oppose his bail plea and we are worried. He is clearly being targeted. The police had earlier said they would not oppose it and they have taken an U-turn within days.”

The student leader’s uncle Rajendra Singh said, “This is a bizarre turn of events. The entire machinery seems to be in the government’s hands and they are using it as per their whims. They have not been able to come up with any evidence at all against Kanhaiya… their argument, that he will influence others once released from jail, is absurd. If he is not guilty, then why keep him behind bars?”
