Islamic State not expanding network in India, says Rajnath Singh

Rajnath said there was no need to worry about IS in the country. While admitting that terrorism was a challenge, the home minister said India would tackle it.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Sunday that the Islamic State (IS) was not making any significant expansion of its network in India and was not an issue to worry about. The statement came a day after PM Narendra Modi, in bilateral meetings with leaders of Jordan, Egypt and Sweden in the US, discussed the the threat posed by IS and acknowledged that it was one of the greatest challenges facing the international community.

Speaking to media persons at the sidelines of an event under the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ programme in Lucknow, Rajnath said there was no need to worry about IS in the country. While admitting that terrorism was a challenge, the home minister said India would tackle it. Rajnath was on a three-day tour of his Lok Sabha constituency Lucknow that concluded Sunday.

After distributing scholarship cheques to girl students at a function, the Home Minister expressed concern about the imbalance in gender ratio of the country. “Balancing the gender ratio is essential to make India a developed nation,” said Rajnath.

The home minister also met Governor Ram Naik, who informed him that the judicial commission report on Muzaffarnagar riots submitted by Justice (retd) Vishnu Sahai had been sent to CM Akhilesh Yadav on September 24 for appropriate action. Naik and Rajnath also had discussions on various bills the UP Governor had forwarded to the President.
