On the basis of a general body meeting (GBM), the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) Saturday rejected the high-level inquiry committee set up by the university to probe the February 9 incident, when “anti-Indian” slogans were allegedly raised during an event. The JNUTA also sought the removal of the registrar with immediate effect.

“…It was unanimously decided that the inquiry committee and the inquiry process should be rejected on several grounds. Every speaker also asked for the registrar’s removal. We will be writing to the vice-chancellor with our demands,” said JNUTA secretary Bikramaditya Choudhary.

In a press statement, the JNUTA said, “The general body noted there is mounting evidence that this is not a genuine inquiry but simply a device for witch-hunting and victimising students under external pressure. The suspensions themselves were done in undue haste, without any material basis and without giving the students a chance to present their case.”

“Now, clear proof has also emerged of fabrication and morphing of videos that have served as ‘evidence’ against the students… ,” it added.

On why they were seeking the removal of Registrar Bupinder Zutshi, Choudhary said, “In his letter to our president, he had expressed regret over the ‘alleged’ attack. Teachers were furious that while even the media had acknowledged the attack, the registrar used this word. It was a breach of trust,” he said.

The JNUTA also demanded that “the administration immediately and earnestly pursue the dropping of charges of sedition and criminal conspiracy against JNU students” and the “university immediately withdraws, in writing, blanket access to the campus given to the police…”.
