“Abhi yahan tak ladhen hain, toh aur aage zaroor ladhenge. Mere bhai ki begunahi zaroor sabit hogi.(Now that we have fought till here, we will surely fight further. My brother’s innocence will be proved),” said Tariq Baig, hours after Bombay High Court acquitted his brother Mirza Himayat Baig, the lone convict in the 2010 German Bakery blast, on Thursday.

While the court acquitted Himayat of all terror charges, it found him guilty of possession of explosives and confirmed life imprisonment on that count.

“Every charge against him is false. They say RDX was found in the house. It is a fake story written by the ATS to frame an innocent Muslim… He wanted to be a teacher and they have ruined his life. He has always been a very quiet person and wanted to lead a good life,” said Tariq, 41.

“Now that we have fought so far and the court has given this verdict, we will surely fight further. My brother’s innocence will be proved; we have faith in our system. It has been really painful to see him being wrongly charged and kept in jail for no reason. What is even more painful is not having a brother around. You can imagine what my parents have gone through all these years,” he said.

His father Inayat Baig, 85, has a small jalebi (sweet meat) stall in Kamwada area in Beed district of Marathwada. Tariq helps him in the stall and also works in a hotel near their home. His other brother, Shahzad, works as a driver for a transport company.

“There have been times when I had to ask for money to attend Himayat’s court hearing. When he was sentenced to death, we were destroyed. But now, with the help of well-wishers from Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, we are fighting the case. I will consult those who are helping us and will decide on the exact course of action,” said Tariq.
