She hoped she would make a difference, all loved her, says Tarishi’s friend

Tarishi’s FB posts, which were often months apart, show a confident, well-travelled young woman.

Not too many 19-year-olds dabble in business or ethics, but Tarishi Jain’s last post on her Facebook page had to do with both. It was about EthiCAL, a student-run organisation at the University of California, Berkeley, that was formed to help underprivileged entrepreneurs and “end global poverty”.

“We are so excited to launch our new clothing line! Pleeease support us in our mission to help rising entrepreneurs and fight poverty all around the world :),” Tarishi wrote on April 5.

Tarishi’s FB posts, which were often months apart, show a confident, well-travelled young woman. There is also a hint of the loneliness at leaving home. In a post in January, in which she tagged the International Students Association at Berkeley, she wrote, “If I didn’t have ISAB for real though, do I even have other friends?? Totally joking, come check out my amazingly diverse and awesome fam (family) at our first general meeting at 102 Moffit!”

In one post in August 2010, she wrote, “trying to do my homework. stupid facebook gets in the way”. Within a few months, her timeline says, “Started school at American International School, Dhaka”.

A friend, who joined the university along with Tarishi and who doesn’t want to be identified, told The Sunday Express they had known each for a year, and she couldn’t believe what had happened. “I met her on the first day of college at Berkeley… Tarishi was a beautiful person. She was one of my best friends at Berkeley. She was in the International Students’ Association at Berkeley and she had an officer position. She was the chair of the external events committee. Everyone loved her. She was also in another club called ethiCAL, which was non-profit. The club sold T-shirts and used the money they made to help finance start-ups. I remember she used to always tell me she was so passionate about this club because it was for such a great cause and she felt like she was making a difference.”

There are photos on Tarishi’s timeline of her in Switzerland, Hong Kong, where the family lived for a while, and Turkey, among other places.

On June 24, 2015, she posted a picture of herself in her graduation gown with her mother. The post read: “To the most selfless, compassionate, and devoted mother — happy birthday. Thank you for going above and beyond in literally everything you do for me, you deserve all the happiness in the world. This goes without saying, but I love you more than you could ever imagine.”

The photo credits for some of her pictures have been given to brother Sanchit Jain, a few years older than her. On June 26, 2013, she posted a photograph of the two of them together as children, and wished Sanchit a “happy 20th”.

On November 13, 2013, Sanchit posted a picture of the two of them together, and wrote, “To my awesomsauce sister Tarishi Jain. thanks for being there and have a happy birthday!!!”. Tarishi responded saying she missed him a lot.

There is the usual schoolgirl banter. In one 2010 post, Tarishi wrote, “Sanju Chowdhury’s body cannot function without me. oh, i feel so special.” Sanjana Chowdhury, who reponded to that post in the affirmative, is also a student at Berkeley. She wrote on Friday night, “Pray for Dhaka, Bangladesh.”
