Clean-up part III: AAP govt, Centre join hands for Rs 825-cr Yamuna action plan

“Under this plan, we will build STPs to curb water pollution, create a new riverfront and repair Chhat Ghat by spending Rs 2.5 crore. We have also deployed a trash skimmer worth Rs 4.5 crore for cleaning Yamuna consistently. If need be, we will deploy more such skimmers. We are treating solid waste and sewage waste… if we get a proposal from the state government, we will treat chemical waste too. The two previous action plans did not work despite nearly Rs 1,500 crore being spent on cleaning up the river. This plan needs to take cognizance of the ineffectiveness of the earlier plans, “ said Uma Bharti.

Hailing the action plan as a “historic” one, Mishra said within the next two-and-a half-years, authorities will ensure that “not a single drop of filthy water flows into the river”.

Expressing gratitude towards Bharti and the central government, the minister said, “I thank Uma didi, her ministry and the central government. We are working like a team of people dedicated to the restoration of this great and important river.”

Mishra said the AAP government is working on a “comprehensive” action plan which will be submitted to the Centre within the next 45 days, but will be executed only after consulting Delhi residents. He added that a team of students from the Virginia University was helping the government draw up the plan.

“We will carry out the project in a time-bound manner… we intend to clean the river… after two to two-and-half years, not a drop of dirty water will flow into it. And the way things are moving, we can see that happening,” he added.

Speaking on other plans to rejuvenate Yamuna, Bharti said, “We are also thinking of recharging Yamuna by using its own water. Hence, small barrages will be built and electricity will be produced. But the main intention is to recharge Yamuna with Yamuna’s water”.
