BSF apprehended 76 Bangladeshis in Meghalaya in one year

While Meghalaya shares 443 kms of the 4096 km Indo-Bangladesh international boundary, as many as nine battalions of the BSF are deployed for border domination and border management.

Troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) deployed along the Meghalaya portion of the Indo-Bangladesh border apprehended 76 Bangladeshi nationals – all engaged in smuggling and criminal activities – and seized over 1,300 cattle and other contraband during the past one year.

A BSF Meghalaya Frontier spokesman said the troops also apprehended two militants and 10 overground workers of different militant outfits during the year, while one GNLA militant surrendered before the troops.

“Those apprehended during the year included 68 Bangladeshi and 35 Indian smugglers apart from eight other Bangladeshi criminals. The seizure included several firearms, fake Indian currency notes valued at Rs 12,500, 4674 bottles of phensedyl, 20 kgs of hemp, 1312 cattle, wooden logs worth Rs 1.85 crore and other contraband items worth Rs 61.55 crore,” the BSF spokesman said.

“The BSF is reaching out to the border population through various interactive programmes as they are the most important stakeholder in the border management. Various items including power tillers, rice harvesters, water storage tanks, computers, school furniture, stationary, wheel chairs, sports items, colour TV with DTH, have been distributed among the border population under different civic action programmes,” the spokesman said.
