As UP Police takes Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed to produce him before a Prayagraj court on Wednesday, in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case, the former MP said, “I was in jail at the time. What will I know about it?”

Thanking the media for keeping him “safe”, he said, “My family has been ruined completely.”

“I am safe because of you people. I have not telephoned anyone from there (inside the jail) as jammers were installed there. I have not hatched any conspiracy and am behind bars for the last six years,” he said. He also claimed that he was being harassed in the Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat.

A UP Police team Tuesday left with Ahmed from the Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat for Prayagraj by road, an official said. “Upon reaching Prayagraj, Atiq would be produced before the court concerned,” said the officer.

On the way, one of the cars experienced a technical problem, causing the convoy to stop at Dungarpur, Rajasthan, for about an hour in the late afternoon. While the car was being fixed, Atiq was confined in the Bichhiwara police station’s lock-up. Later, the caravan departed for Prayagraj, according to ASI Nara Singh of the Bichhiwara police station.

Lawyer Umesh Pal was shot dead along with his two gunners in Prayagraj on February 24 this year allegedly by Atiq’s aides. On March 28, the court there had sentenced Ahmad and two other defendants to life in prison in connection with Umesh Pal kidnapping case from 2006.

In another case, Prayagraj Police on Tuesday booked Atiq, his son Ali Ahmed and 11 others on extortion and attempt to murder charges.
