‘Hurts sentiments of Sanatan Dharma devotees’ – Outfits want action after actor Urvashi Rautela’s temple remarks

Speaking to a YouTube channel on April 10, Rautela claimed: “There is a temple in my name in Uttarakhand. If one visits Badrinath, there is an 'Urvashi temple' right next to it”. The temple is dedicated, Urvashi, an apsara – or celestial nymph – in Hindu mythology.

Two religious organisations of priests in Uttarakhand have submitted representations to the police headquarters against actor Urvashi Rautela following her comments on a temple in Uttarakhand.

Speaking to a YouTube channel on April 10, Rautela claimed: “There is a temple in my name in Uttarakhand. If one visits Badrinath, there is an ‘Urvashi temple’ right next to it”. The temple is dedicated, Urvashi, an apsara – or celestial nymph – in Hindu mythology.

Addressing the DGP, Deepam Seth, the representation said, “We would like to inform you that actress Urvashi Rautela has made misleading statements regarding the Urvashi Temple located near the Badrinath Temple. A video of her statement is currently going viral on social media. In the video, Urvashi Rautela claims that the Urvashi Temple is named after her. She also suggests that a temple by this name should be established in South India as well”.

Seeking action, it further said: “This statement has hurt the sentiments of followers of Sanatan Dharma and devotees of Maa Urvashi Devi. It has caused significant anger among residents and the pilgrimage priests. We kindly request you to take immediate action against Urvashi Rautela and the YouTube channel/platform on which this video was broadcast,” the letters by Uttarakhand Char Dham Teerth Purohit Mahapanchayat and Brahm Kripal Teerth Purohit Panchayat Samiti stated.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Brijesh Sati, general secretary, Char Dham Teerth Purohit Mahapanchayat, said that they have sought action against Rautela and the YouTuber who interviewed her.

“It is unfortunate that someone from Garhwal who knows the culture, religion and the region well is making such irresponsible comments. If she speaks like this, a poor message will spread, and people will emulate it. This hurts the sentiments of not just ‘sanstanis’, but also people in the region. We will submit another representation to the CM tomorrow and if no action is taken, we will lodge a complaint against the two,” he added.

Meanwhile, Rautela’s team took to Instagram to post a clarification. “Urvashi Rautela stated that there is a temple in Uttarakhand with my name, not that there is a temple of Urvashi Rautela. But people don’t listen carefully — just hearing the words “Urvashi” or “temple,” they jump to the conclusion that people are worshipping Urvashi Rautela. This video should be listened to properly before making any remarks… Legal action should be taken against those who made confusing or misleading statements about Urvashi Rautela’s remarks,” it stated.
