Twenty-six-year-old Anjali Verma’s was among the first five marriages to be registered under the Uniform Civil Code after it was rolled out in Uttarakhand on Monday. An employee of the state Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA), Verma’s wedding was nine months ago. But it was on Monday that she got the marriage registered after the UCC portal was launched. “I entered my permanent address, birth certificate, Aadhaar card, PAN card, domicile certificate, and my husband’s details with all these documents. Then I had to get two witnesses, parents or local guardians, to testify on a live video that I uploaded in the portal,” said Verma, who works at a data centre in ITDA. After applying through tatkal services, she said she got to know that the registration was approved on Monday morning through a message. The text message from ITDA, which runs the portal, said that her registration was approved and she can download the certificate or take further action through login. “If I have to get a passport made, I have to go to the court and hire an advocate and it takes a lot of time. That will end under UCC as I just had to pay Rs 250,” she said. Niketa Negi Rawat, meanwhile, was among the first to have her previously registered marriage acknowledged under UCC. She had her wedding in 2013 and registered her marriage in 2017 under the Uttarakhand Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2010. Everyone in the state who have had their marriage registered under any other Act will have to submit documents in the UCC portal to receive an acknowledgement of their marriage under the UCC. “I readied my documents and registered by attaching the necessary ones. I got married in 2013 and got it registered in 2017. Under the UCC portal, I logged in and entered the details. I uploaded all documents yesterday and the approval came through this morning,” Rawat said Monday. … pic.twitter.com/YZmQaPVwhT— Pushkar Singh Dhami (@pushkardhami) January 27, 2025 Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was also among the first registrants.
