The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has accused the Joint Committee of Parliament on Waqf (Amendment Bill), 2024, of violating the established rules for such parliamentary committees and seeking opinion from the organisations that have no stake in the matter.

AIMPLB spokesperson Dr SQR Ilyas in statement on Wednesday said, “JPC should seek suggestions/opinions only from the relevant persons or organisations who are directly involved with Waqf (the stakeholders) but unfortunately the committee is seeking suggestions and opinions from Central ministries, ASI, RSS-supported organisations and the organisations and other groups without standing in society.”

Ilyas said that such organisations and government’s ministries were giving opinions in favour of the Bill that would increase the number of supporting opinions in the committee’s final report.

AIMPLB spokesperson added that earlier opposition members present in the JPC wrote to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha complaining about the objectionable behaviour of the chairman Jagdambika Pal and earlier this week again six opposition members wrote to the Speaker expressing disappointment over the behaviour of the committee chairman.

“We demand that AIMPLB and trustworthy Muslim Organisation’s objections should be seriously taken into account and the unconcerned people and organisations who have no way related to Waqf matters should be avoided. We demand that the JPC should not submit its report in haste but should follow the prescribed guidelines and procedures and after a thorough discussion between all the members should its report be presented,” Ilyas said.

Pal was not available for comment on AIMPLB’s allegations.
