A high-level meeting on security-related issues pertaining to the India-Bangladesh border was held at the official residence of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha in Agartala on Friday.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, an official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said, “A meeting of various security forces was held at the official residence of Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha to discuss enhanced surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border. The closed-door meeting lasted for more than an hour. It was attended by officers of the Border Security Force, Assam Rifles, and other forces, as well as officials from various intelligence agencies.”

Tripura shares an 856 km-long international border with Bangladesh, parts of which are still unfenced due to local disputes.

Among other states in the Northeast, Meghalaya has 443 km of international border with Bangladesh, Mizoram has 318 km, and Assam shares 263 km of border.

Meanwhile, just a day after the seizure of eight pistols along with 16 magazines at Agartala railway station, 11 Bangladeshi nationals, including four women and four minors, were apprehended at Sabroom in South Tripura district on Friday.

The police said the group was caught by the Border Security Force (BSF). The Bangladeshis reportedly arrived in Tripura from Gujarat, and were planning to go back to Bangladesh via Sabroom in the northeastern state.

“They are currently at Manubazar police station. A case will be lodged against them soon,” said a senior police officer in the South Tripura district.

The accused has been identified as Litan Mia.

“We found a mobile phone in his possession. We arrested him and started our inquiry to know how he intruded into Tripura,” said an officer at the New Capital Complex police station.

Meanwhile, security protocols have been enhanced at the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala.

“All the measures have been adopted, eyeing the present situation. This is to ensure smooth check-in, screening of baggage, and boarding under the present security alert. We are following these protocols of threat assessment and security deployments,” Kailash Chander Meena, Director, MBB Airport, told reporters.
