Four members of a family, including a 35-year-old man, his wife and two daughters, were found dead at their residence in Sahabganj village of Unnao district’s Achalganj area on Monday.
The police suspect Amit Yadav smothered his wife Geeta Yadav (30) and daughters Khushi (10) and Nidhi (6) to death before hanging himself with a hook.
The bodies of Geeta and their daughters were found lying on a cot and a pillow was spotted near her neck, it is learnt.
The incident came to light when a youth from a neighbouring village saw through a window Amit hanging from a hook and alerted his brother Ajit Yadav who lives nearby.
Ajit along with others rushed to the house and knocked on the door but got no response. One of them climbed onto the roof and entered the house to find three more dead inside. The police and a forensic team also reached the spot and started the investigation.
“We recovered an audio message from Amit’s cellphone in which he confessed to have killed his wife and children. The exact motive behind the act is still unclear,” said Rajesh Pathak, Station House Officer of Achalganj police station.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, the report of which is awaited.
Amit was employed with a tractor agency.
Unnao Superintendent of Police (SP) Deepak Bhuker said they received information that Amit Yadav had died by suicide at his residence in Sahabganj village, following which a police team was dispatched to the scene.
The family members said the deaths could be linked to a land dispute with some people.
However, no formal complaint has been lodged with the police so far, the police said.
