Additional assets, including from the Coast Guard, have been diverted to the area to augment the rescue efforts,” a Navy spokesperson said.A fishing vessel collided with a Navy submarine about 70 nautical miles off Goa’s coast Thursday night, the Navy said.
In a statement on Friday, the Navy said 13 crew members were aboard the fishing vessel at the time of the collision. Eleven of them have been rescued, while two are still reported missing.
According to sources, the fishing trawler ‘Marthoma’ from Kerala collided with a Scorpene-class submarine off Goa’s coast, somewhere between Goa and Karwar, at around 9 pm on Thursday. “The submarine was in transit at periscope-level depth. It was not fully submerged nor fully surfaced. The fishing trawler collided with the submarine,” a source said.
According to sources, 11 crew members were immediately rescued by the Navy and the ships in the area that responded in the aftermath of the collision. Some of the crew members are from West Bengal, as per sources.
