An FIR was registered against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi at Guwahati Saturday for his controversial statement this week on the “capture of institutions” by the BJP and RSS.
The complainant, named Monjit Chetia, has singled out the statement made by Gandhi at the inauguration of the Congress’s new headquarters in Delhi. Hitting out at RSS chief Mohan Bhagawat saying the date of the Ram Temple consecration in Ayodhya should be celebrated as as the “true Independence” of India, Gandhi had stated: “The BJP and RSS have captured every single institution, and we are now fighting the BJP, the RSS, and the Indian State itself”.
The FIR has been registered at Pan Bazar police station in Guwahati under section 152 and 197(1)d of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for “acts endangering sovereignty unity and integrity of India,” a cognizable and non-bailable office.
The BJP has jumped on these remarks by Rahul Gandhi for referring to a “fight” with the Indian state, with BJP national president JP Nadda accusing him of working “in the direction of breaking India and dividing our society.”
In his complaint, Chetia has written that the statement “made in a public forum by a person who is presently holding the position of Leader of the Opposition, is not an ordinary political remark… They represent a direct challenge to the integrity and stability of India, warranting immediate legal action.”
