A case has been registered after a fake video of the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar related to local body elections in Kerala circulated on social media platforms, officials told news agency PTI. The Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Police Saturday registered a case after the fake video was found during cyber patrolling operations a day earlier, officials said.

The video, which was traced to the social media platform, X, contained a fabricated photo and edited video of the CEC, they told the news agency. Police suspect that the same video was circulated on other social media platforms.

A case was registered against unknown persons under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 197(1)(d) (to publish or make false or misleading statements), 340(1) (forged document or electronic record), 340(2) (dishonestly using a forged document or electronic record), and Information Technology Act section 66C (identity theft), the PTI report stated.

Cyber patrolling activities have been strengthened in the wake of upcoming local body elections in Kerala, due to the possibility of circulation of misleading online content, the police stated.

As part of the patrolling activity, several false propaganda photos and videos which were under circulation over online platforms have been removed in the past few days, PTI noted.
