European vacation turns tragic for Nagpur family; parents dead, children injured after taxi collision

The Indian Embassy in Italy has also confirmed the deaths and said they are in touch with their family and the local authorities.

An Indian family’s European trip turned tragic on Thursday when a Nagpur businessman and his wife died in a road accident in Italy, leaving their children injured, one critically.

Javed Akhtar (57), and his wife, Nadra, died in a road accident on the last day of their vacation in Italy on October 2. The couple, along with daughters Arzoo (22) and Shifa (18), and son Jazel (15), were on a 10-day tour of Italy and France, according to relative Iqbal Azmi, a retired deputy superintendent of police, PTI reported.

“Their 9-seater taxi collided with another vehicle in Grosseto (Tuscany) on the morning of October 2. Javed and Nadra died, while Arzoo is critically injured. She has undergone an operation and is currently unconscious. Shifa and Jazel also sustained injuries,” Azmi said.

The Indian Embassy in Italy has also confirmed the deaths and said they are in touch with their family and the local authorities.

“The Embassy conveys its heartfelt and sincere condolences for the tragic loss of two Indian nationals from Nagpur in an accident near Grosseto. Our prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured family members who are undergoing treatment. The Embassy is in contact with the family and local Italian authorities. We are providing all assistance to the family,” the embassy posted on X.

Relatives fly down to Italy

Family members got in touch with the injured via video call, and two relatives have already travelled to Italy. The Maharashtra administration and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are assisting the family. The Akhtars own the Gulshan Plaza hotel in Nagpur.

Nagpur Collector Vipin Itankar confirmed that officials are coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Italy to repatriate the bodies. District officials have visited the family home, while the tragedy has left the local hotel fraternity in deep sorrow. Vijay Chourasia, owner of a neighbouring hotel, said: “We came to know about the incident just yesterday.”
