BJP national president J P Nadda on Monday constituted an eight-member team of leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to visit Tamil Nadu’s Karur and probe the circumstances leading to the stampede during actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally, which left 41 people dead, on Saturday.

The BJP generally sends its own leaders to take stock of such incidents, but this time it has included MPs from its allies — Shiv Sena and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) — in the panel. “The BJP national president has constituted an NDA delegation to visit Karur, Tamil Nadu, and to look into the circumstances which led to this incident, meet the affected families of this tragedy and submit its report at the earliest,” the party said.

The members of the delegation include BJP MPs Hema Malini, who is the convenor of the delegation, Anurag Thakur, Tejasvi Surya, Brij Lal, Rekha Sharma and Aparajita Sarangi, apart from Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde and TDP MP Putta Mahesh Kumar.

“The precise contours and programme of the delegation are being chalked out and will be relayed to the members very soon; all its members have been chosen for their experience in these matters in the past and have served on similar committees earlier as well,” a senior BJP leader said.

The BJP leadership had recently sent its fact-finding committees, comprising party leaders, to look into incidents such as Maddur communal clashes in Karnataka and Kolkata law college gangrape among other incidents.
