Motwani Bhavan to be built at IIT Kanpur

The wife of celebrated Stanford professor Rajeev Motwani,of Google mentorship fame, has donated Rs 7 crore to his alma mater.

The wife of celebrated Stanford professor Rajeev Motwani,of Google mentorship fame, has donated Rs 7 crore to his alma mater Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur which will use it to construct a six-storey building to house the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

“Asha,wife of late Rajeev Motwani,yesterday donated Rs seven crore (USD 1.5 million) to mark his 49th birth anniversary. The Institute will build a six-storey building with the donated sum,” Sanjiv Kashalkar,Registrar of IIT-K,said.

The new building will be named Rajiv Motwani Bhavan and will house the Department of Computer Science and Engineering,he said.

It will have an area of 3650 sq/m and will accommodate 22 faculty offices and 17 laboratories,Kashalkar said.

The donation will also help in transforming innovative ideas and technologies into successful enterprises.

Rajeev Motwani did his B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Kanpur in 1983. He later went to University of California,Berkeley,and did his Ph.D in 1988.

Later,he joined as a faculty in the Department of Computer Science at the Stanford University. He passed away on June 5,2009.

He was awarded the IIT-K Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2006.

Rajeev,who was also one of the founder member of “Google”,(Internet Search Engine) had worked with major IT companies like Mimosa,Weblay and Ster Delta.

He died on June 5,2009.
