Maha likely to finalise ‘best of five’ system for students

The students will have a choice to drop any subject among four, namely Mathematics,Social Sciences,Science and Hindi, where they fear less score.

Maharashtra Government is likely to implement from the next academic year the ‘best of five’ system, allowing students to choose five subjects in which they score well for junior college admissions.

The formula offers the ‘best of five’ option to the students appearing for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam (10th class of state Government). The system will allow them to choose five of the six subjects.

The students will have a choice to drop any subject among four, namely Mathematics,Social Sciences,Science and Hindi, where they fear less score. However, the languages – Marathi and English – will be compulsory.

“I have received a report that parents and schools are positive about the formula which would bring parity for students seeking admission to junior college (class 11th),” School Education Minister Balasaheb Thorat said.

The Government had invited suggestions and objections on the issue. The state board recently approved the formula and sent it to the Government for finalisation.

“We will soon finalise the formula after going through suggestions and objections,” the minister said.

“It (the best of five formula) is a process to bring in parity for SSC students with other boards. Why would there be any objection over the issue,” Thorat said.

The formula was proposed considering similar systems in ICSE and CBSE boards, due to which SCC students were losing admissions in good colleges.

In the backdrop of chaos in online admission procedure for junior colleges last year, the Government is taking all measures to avoid a similar debacle this time around.

“We have trained school teachers for the system so that mistakes can be avoided while filling the online forms,” Thorat said.

The Minister also made it clear that only schools would be allowed to open admission centres for filling up forms and not any private organisation.

The online admission system which was introduced last year attracted a lot of flak,as it was implemented without giving proper information to the students and teachers.
