City govt asks pvt school to roll back fee hike after HC order

Fee hike was not mandatory and schools must explore possibility of utilising existing fund before hiking tuition fee: notification.

The city government has informed the Delhi High Court that it has complied with its order by asking a private school here to roll back the “arbitrary” hike of Rs 400 in tuition fees.

“The respondent (Delhi government) on September 2,2011 wherein,the DoE (Directorate of Education) has issued an order to the manager of Ramjas School,Anand Parbat,to withdraw the arbitrary fee hike (of Rs 400 per month per child),” K S Yadav,deputy director of DoE,said in his affidavit.

The official also noted the “excess amount” levied so far from students be adjusted in future payments of tuition fees by parents,the affidavit,filed before Justice Hima Kohli,said.

The court,earlier,had taken a strong note of allegations that the school,despite having surplus funds to the tune of around Rs 5 core,raised tuition fees by Rs 400 and asked the DoE to get it rolled back.

“The DOE are directed to pass the order against the school to roll back the hiked fee in four weeks and inform the court by next date of hearing,” the court had said.

The city government,after issuing the notice to the school to roll back fees,informed the court.

Earlier,it was alleged a committee,set up by DoE,had enquired and found that the school violated the government’s notification.

The notification stated the fee hike was not mandatory and schools must explore possibility of utilising existing fund before hiking tuition fee.

Ashok Aggarwal,appearing for parents,alleged Ramjas School arbitrarily hiked fee in violation of high court’s earlier order. He also cited the CAG report to drive home the point that schools were having surplus money.
