Hitting back at Karnataka Deputy CM and Congress leader D K Shivakumar for claiming that the ritual “shatru bhairavi yaga’’ is being performed in Kerala, the ruling CPI(M)’s Kerala secretary M V Govindan Friday called it “an insult to the culture of Kerala’’.

On Thursday, Shivakumar had said the yaga, which involves animal sacrifice, was being performed, targeting him, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and the state Congress government.

Without naming anyone, the KPCC chief alleged that some political people in Karnataka were getting it done, and Aghoris were being consulted.

“A big experiment is going on against me in Kerala and our government. Someone has given (details) about it to me in writing, about the puja that is going on. Someone gave me in writing as to where it is being done and who is doing it,” Shivakumar said, when asked about a bracelet he was wearing.

Shatru Bhairavi Yaga is being performed near Rajarajeshwari Temple in Kerala for Shatru Samhara (destruction of enemies). For this yaga ‘Pancha Bali’ (five kinds of sacrifice) is being given…,” he alleged.

Reacting to the allegation, Govindan said, “It is nothing but madness. I have no other word to describe Shivakumar’s claim.”

On rumours that the ritual was held at Sri Rajarajeswara Temple at Taliparamba, Govindan’s home town, in Kannur, he said, “that temple is one of the most prominent Hindu temples in India. There was on such rituals or Shatru Samhara puja at that temple. It is a communal allegation. He is insulting the state’s culture. A Congress leader has adopted such a communal stand to insult Kerala,” he said.

Kerala Temple Affairs Minister K Radhakrishnan said, “Such a thing will not happen in Kerala. It has to be deplored. However, we will look into whether this has happened,” he said.

“An enlightened Kerala will resist any such move,” said Higher Education Minister Dr R Bindu, adding, “I don’t think such a puja will happen in Kerala. It has to be looked into if such things, retrogressive in nature, are happening in the state. Kerala has a stand based on scientific temper not on fables.”
