Amid police security, AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case related to the excise policy, stepped out of jail Monday to file his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls at Civil Lines. Former DCW chief Swati Maliwal and AAP MP Narain Dass Gupta also filed their nominations.

The AAP on Friday nominated Maliwal as its pick for the Upper House and renominated Singh and Gupta for a second term.

According to the affidavits submitted by the leaders, Sanjay Singh and his wife have combined movable assets of over Rs 31 lakh in their bank accounts. The affidavit also mentions 17 pending criminal cases against Singh and one conviction.

Maliwal has total movable assets of over Rs 19 lakh. She has three criminal cases pending, as per the affidavit. Gupta has movable assets of Rs 3.86 crore, including a Mercedes Benz and a Kia Seltos. His family has assets amounting to Rs 27 lakh. There are no criminal cases pending against him.

Singh has been with the party since its inception. Currently, he is also the AAP’s Uttar Pradesh in-charge. A Delhi court had allowed him to physically visit the office of the returning officer to file his nomination. Posting a video of Singh stepping out of the police van, AAP posted on X, “Public Leader Sanjay Singh Azad will again raise the voice of the public in the house…”

His wife Anita Singh and father Dinesh Singh were also present when he filed his papers at Transport Bhawan. Anita and AAP volunteer Abhinav Mishra also filed their nominations as his backup candidates in case his nomination is rejected.

“It is a matter of happiness and pride as he is coming from jail to file his nomination… I thank the CM for his support…,” Anita said.

“The party and the workers trust my son… Sanjay was arrested for speaking the truth… I thank the party and workers for choosing him against the ongoing dictatorship…,” Dinesh Singh said.

Meanwhile, Maliwal, if elected, will be the first woman Rajya Sabha MP of AAP. A core member of the India Against Corruption movement, she has been an active advocate for women’s rights and social issues.

“… I want to thank CM Arvind Kejriwal and party leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh for choosing a common woman like me for the Rajya Sabha… The agitation which we started from the slums of Nand Nagri in 2006 will go to Parliament… In the last 8 years, I have worked hard for the rights of women, and protested to get rules changed… This will now be taken up in the Rajya Sabha…,” she said.

As per the EC’s schedule, polling will take place from 9 am to 4 pm for state assemblies and counting of votes will be at 5 pm on January 19.
