(Photo: IMD/ X) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Cyclone Tej, a depression gathering force in the Arabian sea, intensified into an ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’ on Sunday, near the coasts of Oman and Yemen.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), IMD said, “VSCS Tej over WC & SW AS intensified to ESCS moved NW at 0830 hrs IST of 22 Oct about 160 km E-SE of Socotra (Yemen), 540 km S-SE of Salalah (Oman) & 550 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). Likely to move NW and cross coasts between Al Ghaidah & Salalah around noon of 24 Oct as a VSCS.”

IMD also said that the cyclone would “cross coasts” between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman) around noon on October 24, as a “very severe cyclonic storm”.
D over WC BoB moved W-NW in past 6 hrs at 0830 hours IST of 22nd Oct, about 590 km S of Paradip, 740 km S of Digha, and 880 km S-SW of Khepupara (Bangladesh). Likely to move NW & intensify into DD in next 12 hours recurve and move N-NE in 3 days towards Bangladesh and WB coasts.

Meanwhile, a depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify in the next 12 hours, and move towards the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh in the next three days, the IMD added.
VSCS Tej lay centered at 0530 IST of 22nd Oct over WC & adj SW Arabian Sea about 240 km ESE of Socotra (Yemen), 600 km SSE of Salalah (Oman), and 620 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). The IMD also issued warnings for fishermen to not venture into areas that could be affected by Cyclone Tej and the Bay of Bengal depression in the coming days.
