Damage and relief: Three persons were electrocuted in different rain-related incidents in Chennai. The minister indicated that the cyclone did not have the severe impact that authorities had anticipated. Meanwhile, officials reported no immediate signs of significant damage in Puducherry either. Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced that 500 medical camps will be set up in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore on Sunday.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Kanchipuram on Sunday due to continuous heavy rainfall from Cyclone Fengal, leading to overflowing dams.
In the past 30 hours, 163 millimetres of rainfall has been recorded in the Kanchipuram district, 207 millimeters in Uthiramerur, 134 millimeters in Walajabad, 140 millimeters in Sriperumbudur, 114 millimeters in Kundrathur and 134 millimeters in Chembarambakkam.
Additionally, 10 out of 381 lakes in Kanchipuram district and 103 out of 528 lakes in Chengalpattu district have reached their full capacity.
Furthermore, due to continuous rainfall, the Hanumanthandalam and Magaral dams in Uthiramerur taluk of the Kanchipuram district are overflowing and the excess water is flowing into the Cheyyar river.
Heavy rainfall has been recorded in several parts of Tamil Nadu since Saturday morning, with Cyclone Fengal causing widespread flooding.

Cyclone Fengal has delivered the equivalent of a year's rainfall in just 36 hours in some parts of Tamil Nadu, with certain areas receiving around 56 centimetres of rain, according to Rajesh Lakhani, Tamil Nadu's Additional Chief Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management.
Lakhani stated that as the cyclone has now crossed the region, the government is focusing on restoration efforts to address the resulting damage.
The Additional Chief Secretary noted that 49 relief camps have been set up in the Viluppuram district alone.
After a video of an IndiGo flight aborting its landing at the Chennai International Airport amid the turbulent weather ahead of Cyclone Fengal's landfall has gone viral, promoting the airline to issue a clarification and stating that the crew executed a go-around following established safety protocols on November 30.
The statement issued by the IndiGo Airline stated that the cockpit crew of flight 6E 683, operating from Mumbai to Chennai on November 30, executed a go-around after attempting to land in adverse weather conditions. The manoeuvre was carried out following the established safety protocols.
The viral video shows the IndiGo plane struggling with crosswinds and turbulence as it approaches the runway. After making a brief touchdown, the pilot aborts the landing and takes off again, ensuring the safety of the passengers and the crew.
Indigo further clarified that such manoeuvres are standard and the pilots are properly trained to handle such situations.

Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall on the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Saturday, November 30, has caused widespread flooding in several areas, particularly in Cuddalore.
As the storm moves westward, heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh, including coastal and Rayalaseema regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued warnings for continued severe weather in these areas.
KVS Srinivas, Managing Director of the Cyclone Warning Centre in Visakhapatnam, said that cyclone Fengal is likely to move westwards very slowly, as it has remained stationary at the same location for the past six hours.
He further mentioned that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in several regions of Andhra Pradesh, including the coastal and Rayalaseema regions, in the next 24 hours.

According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Fengal has weakened into a deep depression.
"The Cyclonic Storm FENGAL (pronounced as FEINJAL) over north coastal Tamil Nadu & Puducherry remained practically stationary during past 12 hours, weakened into a deep depression and lay centered at 11.30 hours IST of today, the 1st December 2024 over the same region near latitude 12.0°N and longitude 79.8°E, close to Puducherry, about 30 km north of Cuddalore, 40 km east of Villupuram and 120 km south-southwest of Chennai," the weather office said in a post on 'X.' It is likely to move westwards very slowly and weaken gradually into a depression over north Tamil Nadu during the next 12 hours, it added.

Indian Army troops from the Chennai Garrison Battalion, operating under the Dakshin Bharat Area, were mobilized in the early hours of Sunday to assist in rescue operations in flood-affected areas of Puducherry, news agency ANI reported.
A Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) column consisting of one officer, six junior commissioned officers and 62 other ranks was deployed swiftly.
The water level in some localities of Krishna Nagar rose to nearly five feet, leaving residents of nearly 500 houses stranded. The efforts made by the Indian Army during its rescue operations started at 6:15 am on Sunday, with over 100 individuals being evacuated in the first 2 hours.
The official statement added that residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain indoors and follow all instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety. Meanwhile, people living in nearby areas have been shifted to relief camps near Kalpakkam in Chengalpattu district, in the wake of Cyclone Fengal. (ANI)
Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy Sunday said that Puducherry received 50 centimetres of rainfall overnight that has led to flooding in the city.
"Puducherry has received 50 cm of rainfall, resulting in severe flooding. I am currently inspecting the flood-affected areas. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to evacuate those stranded in the floodwaters," Chief Minister N Rangasamy told news agency ANI.

The Madley subway in Tamil Nadu was closed due to waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall across several districts of the state.

Tamil Nadu Minister K Ponmudy, and Villupuram District Collector Dr C Palani inspected the flood-affected area in Kottakuppam, news agency ANI reported.
Palani, speaking to ANI, said: "We had a very heavy rain Marakkanam and Kottakuppam coastal area. We had almost 45 to 50 centimetres of rainfall. We have however made preemptive steps to move the possibly affected people to the shelters. We have almost 1,400 people who have already shifted in the night itself..."
Normal life was crippled in Puducherry on Sunday due to heavy rains that lashed the union territory in the wake of Cyclone Fengal, which crossed the coast here last night, news agency PTI reported.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Puducherry recorded 46 cm rainfall during the last 24 hours ending 9 am today.
What all happened in Puducherry?
While rescue operations are underway in multiple affected areas, hundreds of residents have been evacuated from flood-hit areas. The operations have been conducted efficiently with the coordinated efforts of the local administration, police forces, Army and specialized rescue teams.
Efforts are ongoing in Jeeva Nagar and other vulnerable areas to evacuate people and provide necessary relief, officials have told PTI.

Districts in south interior Karnataka are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday, owing to cyclone Fengal over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru and the surrounding districts until Tuesday, December 3, forecasting that some areas may receive rainfall exceeding 100 mm.
Minimum temperatures in central Bengaluru are projected to be around 17 to 18 degrees Celsius in the coming days. In parts of North Karnataka, these temperatures could drop to around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Cuddalore and Karur districts of Tamil Nadu, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated in its forecast, as of 10 am on Sunday.
Krishnagiri, Tirupathur, Erode, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Mayiladutharai districts of Tamil Nadu, Purucherry, and Karaikal areas are also likely to receive moderate rainfall today.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipettai and Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu, according to the forecast.
Chennai, Chengalpattu, Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Tiruppur will also receive light to moderate rainfall today.
As a result of this spell, waterlogging, slippery roads are likely in some areas. Traffic may also be affected in some areas.

"The Cyclonic Storm "FENGAL" [pronounced as FEINJAL] over north coastal Tamilnadu & Puducherry crossed the coast and lay close to Puducherry. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers at many places over south coastal and Rayalaseema regions while extremely heavy rains are expected at one or two places over SPSR-Nellore, Tirupati and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Heavy rains lashed Chennai, its nearby districts and Puducherry as cyclone Fengal made a landfall near Puducherry on Saturday evening.
The cyclone crossed the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts during the early hours of Sunday morning and is likely to continue moving west-southwestward, weakening into a deep depression within the next few hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated.
The Met department has warned of heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu till December 2.
Cyclone Fengal-triggered heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed northern Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry on Saturday, prompting a shutdown of the Chennai airport, and inundated many parts of the city but there were no immediate reports of major damage, the government said.
The cyclonic storm made landfall close to the Puducherry union territory area. Steady rains pounded Chennai, its nearby districts, and Puducherry affecting public transport, including bus, train, and flight services and people from vulnerable areas were moved to safe shelters by authorities. From the afternoon onwards, the rains turned intermittent in most areas and by nightfall, it ceased.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, KKSSR Ramachandran informed there were no immediate reports of major damage in the aftermath of the cyclone and said related details could be known possibly by Sunday. Three persons were electrocuted in different rain-related incidents in Chennai.
Hospitals and houses were inundated in Chennai and its neighbourhoods while people used flyovers and spaces beneath them as parking lots to avoid a repeat of what was endured during the 2015 floods.
Official sources said apart from the cancellation of 55 flights, 19 others were diverted. The services include both domestic and international flights. Earlier in the day, when the airport was operational, at least 12 flights were delayed.
The complete disruption of services left the passengers stranded and according to rough estimates from official sources, over 10,000 people could have been affected due to cancellations and diversions.

Cyclone Fengal , that made a delayed landfall close to Puducherry on Saturday evening, caused intense rainfall and squally weather over the coastal belt of Tamil Nadu. This is the second cyclone after Dana to develop in the Bay of Bengal and affect India’s east coast in less than two months.

Puducherry experienced heavy rains on Saturday, prompting the union territory administration to send SMS alerts to around 12 lakh residents cautioning them to remain vigilant in view of the approaching cyclonic storm Fengal.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy visited the rain-affected areas to review the steps taken by the Disaster Management department, especially in accommodating those evacuated from low-lying areas into relief centres.
The chief minister instructed officials to closely monitor the situation and ensure the safety of the residents.
District Collector A Kulothungan briefed the chief minister about the distribution of food packets to those staying in the shelter homes.
Kulothungan told PTI that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure that people remained safe.
"We have evacuated people from low lying areas and shelter homes are ready to accommodate them. Arrangements were also made to supply food packets," he said, adding that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Arakkonam had arrived to engage in relief and rehabilitation work.
According to the official, control rooms have been opened in the collectorate and also in the line departments.

Chennai airport on Friday announced the suspension of operations till 4 am on December 1 following heavy inundation of runways and the taxiway, due to the cyclone 'Fengal' triggered rains and the 'adverse weather condition,' with over 50 flights being cancelled and scores of passengers left in the lurch.
Official sources here said the two runways and the taxiway were inundated and as many as 55 flights were cancelled and 19 others diverted, adding, the services include both domestic and international operations. Earlier in the day, when the airport was operational, at least 12 flights were delayed.
The Chennai airport in a post on 'X' said that a team of senior officials was closely monitoring the situation to facilitate the earliest resumption of operations as meteorological conditions improve.
As many as 20 flights were cancelled in Hyderabad as well which were services to and from Chennai and Tirupati.
Initially, expecting an earlier landfall of the cyclone, airport authorities had declared suspension of operations till 7 pm starting from 12.30 pm.

Cyclonic storm Fengal has commenced making landfall close to Puducherry and it may approximately take 4 hours for it to cross the coast completely, an India Meteorological Department official said here on Saturday.
Citing data and observations, IMD-Regional Meteorological Centre, Additional Director General, S Balachandran told PTI that the process of the cyclone's landfall commenced at about 5.30 pm on November 30.
On the area of landfall, he said it was close to 'Puducherry area' and that it may take approximately 4 hours for the completion of the landfall process and added that more related information would be made available later.

Cyclone Fengal, currently located about 50 km southeast of Mahabalipuram, 80 km east-northeast of Puducherry, and 90 km south-southeast of Chennai, is moving westward at 7 km/h. It is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry later this evening.
"The Cyclonic Storm “Fengal” (pronounced as 'Feinjal') over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved westwards with a speed of 7 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centered at 2.30 pm today over the same region near latitude 12.3°N and longitude 80.5°E, about 50 km southeast of Mahabalipuram, 80 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 90 km south-southeast of Chennai," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a post on X.
"It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during the evening of 30th November. There is a possibility of slow movement of the system while approaching the coasts," the post further read.
In a rain-related incident, a migrant worker was electrocuted in Chennai, news agency PTI reported.
Hospitals and houses were inundated in Chennai and its neighbourhoods on Saturday following Cyclone Fengal induced heavy downpour, as civic authorities said clearing works were being carried out on a 'war footing.' Barricades and umbrellas were swept away by gusty winds and road users scurried for cover as rains poured, with cyclone Fengal inching closer to the shoreline on Saturday, leaving many areas in and around Chennai under water.
Rainwater entered the premises of two state-run hospitals at Chromepet, a general hospital and a facility for thoracic medicine, both of which are located side by side and frequented by people.
Water was close to the level of one's ankle even inside the hospital, leaving healthcare seekers and doctors in a tight spot. Police and local authorities placed sandbags at entry points and said all steps were being taken to address the issue.
Rainwater entered houses in suburban localities, such as the Hasthinapuram--Tirumalai Nagar, and residents had to place even refrigerators and washing machines on cots to prevent them from getting damaged.
Public transportation services were hit and people used flyovers and spaces beneath them as parking lots to avoid a repeat of what was endured during the 2015 floods. In view of the rains and copious inflows, reservoirs such as Chembarambakkam looked like an ocean.

Cyclone Fengal is currently located about 100 km northeast of Puducherry and 100 km southeast of Chennai, moving at 10 km/h, Dr Balachandran, Director of the Meteorological Department in Chennai said. It is expected to make landfall near Puducherry later this evening, he added.
"It is expected to cross near to Puducherry today evening. The windspeed at the time of crossing (landfall) will be 70-80kmph gusting to 90kmph," Dr Balachandran said.
"At around 11:30 am the position of the cyclone was Southeast of the Bay of Bengal. It is moving towards the coast... There is a chance of the cyclone slowing down and it is expected to make landfall in 10-12 hours," Delhi Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre head Dr Dushmanta Ranjan Patnaik said.

The India Meteorological Department predicted light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers at many places over south coastal and Rayalaseema regions while extremely heavy rains are expected at one or two places over SPSR-Nellore, Tirupati and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh.
According to IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely at one or two places over South Coastal and Rayalaseema due to Cyclone Fengal.
Heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over the Prakasam, SPSR-Nellore, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Tirupati and Chittoor Districts on Sunday, it said Squally winds with speed reaching 50 Kmph may prevail over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

Where does Cyclone Fengal hover now ? IMD in its post on X says, "The cyclonic storm “FENGAL” over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 08 30 hours IST of today, the 30th November 2024 over the same region near latitude 12.3°N and longitude 80.9°E, about 120 km east-northeast of Puducherry, 110 km southeast of Chennai, 200 km north-northeast of Nagappattinam and 420 km north of Trincomalee.
It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during evening of 30th November."
Authorities remain braced to tackle any untoward incident as Cyclone Fengal has inched closer to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. Regarding cyclone preparedness, Cuddalore District Collector Sibi Adhithya Senthil Kumar told ANI, "For the Fengal cyclone, the administration has been taking a variety of precautionary measures. We have around 42 cyclone shelters and temporary shelters...cyclone shelters have food arrangements, toilet facilities and power backup facilities as well...Control Room is working 24*7 and there are 21 intra-departmental zonal teams which are also working on the field...we have ensured enough ration materials available in low-lying and vulnerable areas..."
Meanwhile, heavy rains continued in parts of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as the landfall of Cyclone 'Fengal' inched closer. The rains have disrupted normalcy and people have been evacuated. The downpour was accompanied by gusty winds and what began as intermittent rainfall in coastal regions on the night of November 29, gradually became steady leading to inundation in several areas.

As the weather department has forecast strong winds with cyclone "Fengal" approaching closer to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry coasts, Chennai Airport has suspended its operations till 7 pm today.
As heavy rain lashed parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with cyclonic storm “Fengal” inching closer to the coasts, flight operations have been hit at Chennai airport. While 22 flights have been cancelled, three have been diverted since Saturday morning.
Fit Air flight 8D0831 headed from Colombo to Chennai was diverted to Colombo while two IndiGo flights, from Hyderabad and Abu Dabi, have been diverted to Hyderabad and Bengaluru respectively.

Sriperumbudur of Kanchipuram district witnesses heavy rains and gusty winds as Cyclone Fengal approaches the coast.
Ahead of cyclone Fengal making landfall over Puducherry, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reviewed preparedness and visited the Disaster Management Control room in Chennai. Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management KKSSR Ramachandran yesterday conducted a meeting.
On December 1, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in interior Tamil Nadu, and on December 2 and 3, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in the state.
As cyclone "Fengal" is expected to make landfall today evening in Puducherry, authorities are on high alert. “For the last four days, we have been deploying staff across Puducherry beaches. We have already advised fishermen not to venture into the sea. From last night, due to high waves, we have closed all the beaches and are advising the general public and tourists to stay away from the beaches," Puducherry SSP Kalaivanan told PTI.

Marina beach, usually flocked by residents and tourists in Chennai on Saturday, wears a deserted look today. All activities at the beach remain suspended in the wake of cyclone Fengal, as per news agency ANI.
As heavy rain continued to lash parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, flight operations have been suspended at Chennai airport. In a post on X, Chennai Airport said, IndiGo airlines has temporarily suspended its operations due to adverse weather conditions. Flight operations is expected to resume once weather improves.
As heavy rain pounded Puducherry, the Union Territory administration issued SMS alerts to around 12 lakh residents cautioning them to remain vigilant. The cyclonic storm Fengal is likely to make landfall by today evening.
District Collector A Kulothungan told PTI that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure that people remained safe. "We have evacuated people from low lying areas and shelter homes were also ready to accommodate them. Arrangements were also made to supply food packets," he said adding that National Disaster Relief Force from Arakonam has arrived to engage in relief and rehabilitation works.
Authorities are on high alert and control rooms are set up in the collectorate. Tourist sports have been closed in Puducherry.
Ahead of cyclone Fengal making landfall, high tides are witnessed across the shores of Chennai. With warning already in place for fisherfolks not to venture into the sea, boats are seen docked along the shores in a video shared by news agency ANI. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Fengal is expected to make landfall close to Puducherry, along the Tamil Nadu coast by today evening.
Meanwhile in Sri Lanka, as many as 15 people have died due to adverse weather and more than 450,000 people have been hit by floods. The adverse weather was caused due to deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The police said they arrested a school principal and a teacher over the deaths of six students due to flood waters in the eastern town of Sammanthurai while travelling on a tractor.
The principal had asked the students to travel by tractor due to a lack of buses.

In view of the cyclone Fengal, residents in Puducherry have been asked to stay indoors. District Collector A Kulothungan held discussions with the officials of PWD, local administration, police and other line departments and reviewed the situation.

As strong waves lash the shores of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, authorities and people in the areas remain braced for adversaries. Police, fire and rescue personnel have been deployed in all vulnerable places. Departure and arrival timing of flights were affected to some extent. Chennai Metro Rail said its services were operational without any glitches and informed public of parking areas in specific stations that were prone to inundation. Police have installed barricades blocking access to beaches including Marina and Mamallapuram. As of now, power supply remains uninterrupted.
Heavy rains lashed parts of northern Tamil Nadu on Saturday and waterlogging has been reported in some parts. Residents of similar vulnerable areas too parked their vehicles in safe areas. Roads were largely deserted and civic workers, police, and fire and rescue personnel were deployed in all vulnerable places.
The landfall of cyclone Fengal is expected in a few hours and people in Tami Nadu, Puducherry remain braced. The weather department has shared the latest update on the cyclone fengal's location on X. The IMD's post read, "Cyclonic Storm 'FENGAL' over Southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 11.8°N and longitude 81.7°E, about 210 km southeast of Chennai. To move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during afternoon of 30th November."
As many as 471 people belonging to 164 families have been moved to six relief centers in Tiruvallur and Nagapattinam districts. In case of any untoward incident, boats, generators, motor pumps and necessary equipment have been readied and NDRF, state rescue teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas.
While the weather department has sounded red alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, all educational institutions will remain shut today. Public transportation services will remain suspended today afternoon on the East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram road.
