A woman inspector and two journalists were indicted by a probe into the alleged suicide of a girl in Jalandhar.
A report submitted by Jalandhar Inspector General of Police,Gurpreet Singh Deo,has found that alleged harassment by Inspector Balwinder Kaur, photojournalist Brijesh Kumar and cameraman Ravi led Shivali to commit suicide.
The deceased,a student of SD College for Girls, took the extreme step on August 30 after allegedly being humiliated by Kaur when stopped at a ‘Naka,’ an official spokesman said.
Kaur was later placed under suspension and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had ordered thorough investigations in the case.
In her inquiry report,Deo has concluded that the girl thought that there was no way to prevent her pictures from being publicly shared, the spokesman said.
In her (IG) opinion, the police and media have to share the blame in this case and are required to be held accountable to the law of the land. As the IG has pointed out,if a little compassion and understanding had been shown by either of them, the young girl may have been alive, he said.
It had been decided that suitable disciplinary action against Kaur for her general misconduct and specifically misconduct in the present instance be initiated, he said.
The opinion of the Advocate General of Punjab has been obtained and an FIR under provisions of Section 306 of the IPC for abetment to suicide will be registered against the three, the IGP has said in her report.
Meanwhile,Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh, who met the deceased’s parents, called for the immediate arrest of Kaur and justice to the deceased girl.
