A 21-year-old IIT girl student was found hanging in her room

A 21-year-old IIT girl student was on Tuesday found hanging in her room and later declared brought dead by doctors at a government hospital here,police said.

The first year M Tech student,a native of Kareem Nagar in Andhra Pradesh was found hanging in her room by a dupatta around 2.30 pm by a carpenter,who had gone there to fix a door,they said.

Police has not found any suicide note.

The body is kept at the Government Hospital,they said.

Chennai: Expressing regret over the assault on a photographer of a leading English daily,the Indian Institute of Technology,Madras (IIT-M) today claimed the “unfortunate incident ” was provoked by the media professional who “insisted upon” clicking certain pictures in violation of Press Council of India (PCI) norms.

IIT-M Director Bhaskar Ramamurthy said in a statement that the institute regrets the “unfortunate incident and apologizes to the concerned photo-journalist and the media at large.”

Lensman of ‘The New Indian Express’,Albin Mathew,was allegedly assaulted by a professor and some security guards inside the institution on Tuesday when he had gone to cover the suicide of a girl student.

The incident has attracted widespread criticism with MDMK founder Vaiko and media bodies including the Tamil Nadu Press Photographers Associaton,Chennai Press Club and Reporters’ Guild slamming the alleged attack.
