3 undertrials killed as cop van is attacked near Delhi

Undertrials were being taken to Bhondsi jail in Gurgaon after being produced in Rohtak sessions court.

IN a suspected gang war,nearly a dozen armed men ambushed a police van carrying five undertrials,killing three and leaving the other two seriously injured,in Jhajjar district of Haryana on Saturday afternoon. Two policemen were also injured.

According to officials,the undertrials were being taken to Bhondsi jail in Gurgaon after being produced in the Rohtak sessions court. The incident took place at

3.45 pm,when the police van reached the Aurangpur bend,70 km from New Delhi.

A truck rammed into the police vehicle. “Within a minute,three cars carrying around a dozen armed men surrounded the police van and opened indiscriminate fire. The policemen returned fire. Two policemen,Head Constable Vinod and Constable Vikas,sustained bullet injuries,” said Patram Singh,SP,Jhajjar.

“We were outnumbered,” said ASI Surinder Singh. The men reportedly took away a carbine and an INSAS rifle,while they left behind a double-barrel gun.

The three undertrials who died have been identified as Sri Bhagwan,his brother Dilbagh and Anil,all residents of Rohtak district. The two injured are Ranbir,also of Rohtak,and Naseem,a resident of Faridabad.

The five men,booked for murder,were lodged in Bhondsi jail since last year.

“Preliminary investigations indicate it was a case of gang war,” said Alok Mittal,IGP,Rohtak range.
