Coromandel express accident: PM takes stock, Murmu anguished

At around 7pm, 10-12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed near Baleswar and fell on the opposite track. After some time, another train from Yeswanthpur to Howrah dashed into those derailed coaches resulting in the derailment of its 3-4 coaches.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union ministers and leaders      cutting across party lines expressed anguish at the train crash in Odisha’s Balasore district, which claimed several lives and injured hundreds. The Prime Minister said rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected.

Modi spoke to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and took stock of the situation. Home Minister Amit Shah said NDRF had reached the accident site. “Deeply anguished to know about the loss of lives in an unfortunate rail accident in Balasore, Odisha. My heart goes out to the bereaved families. I pray for the success of rescue operations and quick recovery of the injured,” President Murmu said in a Twitter post.

“In this hour of grief, my  thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Rescue ops are underway at the site of the mishap and all possible assistance is being given to those affected,” Modi said.

“The train accident at Balasore in Odisha is deeply agonizing. The NDRF team has already reached the accident site, and other teams are also rushing to join the rescue operation. My condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the speedy recovery of those injured,” Shah said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asked party workers and leaders to extend all support needed for rescue efforts. “My heart goes out to the bereaved families. Wishing for the speedy recovery of those injured,” Gandhi said.

“Deeply saddened by the terrible train tragedy involving Coromandel Express in Odisha. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims….We urge the authorities to expedite rescue operations and provide relief to the injured. Request Congress workers to provide all possible help,” the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said.

Calling the accident ‘deeply agonizing’, Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted that NDRF team has already reached the accident site, and other teams are also rushing to join the rescue operation.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said he has spoken to his Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik. He announced that a four-member team is being rushed to the accident site to coordinate the rescue of Tamils on the train.

“I have asked Transport Minister S S Sivasankar and 3 IAS officials to rush to Odisha to rescue the Tamils involved in the accident. Have directed setting up a helpline,” he said.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee tweeted: “Shocked to know that the Shalimar-Coromondel express, carrying passengers from West Bengal, collided with a goods train… and some of our outbound people have been seriously affected/injured. We are coordinating with the Odisha government and South Eastern Railways for our people’s sake. All out efforts for rescue, retrieval, aid and assistance initiated.”
