(File) The Centre told the Rajya Sabha Thursday that the conviction rate in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases has gone up to 74.59 per cent in 2022 from 68 per cent in 2018.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh said this in a written reply to a question by TMC MP Dr Santanu Sen.
“CBI’s conviction rate was at 68 per cent in 2018, 69.19 per cent in 2019, 69.83 per cent in 2020, 67.56 per cent in 2021 and 74.59 per cent in 2022,” Singh informed the Rajya Sabha in response to the written question by the TMC MP.
Singh also said the Directorate of Prosecution headed by Director of Prosecution in the CBI, with the assistance of the additional legal advisors, deputy legal advisors, senior public prosecutors, public prosecutor and assistant public prosecutors, is responsible to conduct and supervise the cases pending trial, appeal and revision in courts. “There are also Sub Directorates of Prosecution in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai to closely monitor the trial/appeal/ revision petitions in the trial courts/high courts etc,” he said.

With a view to improve the conviction rate, the strategy followed by the CBI includes these measures; conduct of investigations with the aid of legal support so that the best possible evidence is collected and presented to the trial court, meticulous follow up during trial so that evidence is presented in the best possible manner, harmonious and synergistic working of executive officers in tandem with the law officers of the Directorate of Prosecution and enhancing the capabilities in terms of skills, resources and coordination,” Singh said.
Notably, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the CBI to not spare any corrupt person, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal claimed that the number of convictions in corruption cases was higher under the UPA regime.
Citing numbers, the former Congress leader tweeted: “PM to CBI: Don’t spare the corrupt. March 2016: Jitendra Singh told Parliament: 2013: 1136 persons convicted for corruption, 2014: 993, 2015:878, 2016: 71. Conviction of the corrupt higher during UPA!” Pointing out that facts do not lie, Sibal asked: “Who is protecting the corrupt?”
Addressing a gathering at the CBI’s diamond jubilee celebrations on Monday, PM Modi said those who benefited from corruption for decades have created an ecosystem, which targets investigative agencies. But the agencies should not be deterred by it and focus on their work, he said. “Today there is no dearth of political will to take action against corruption in the country. You do not have to hesitate and stop. I am aware that action has been taken against people who have been very powerful for many, many years as they were part of the government and the system. Over many years, they have made an ecosystem, which covers their wrongful activities and they got active to tarnish your image,” Modi had said.
