With less than a day to go for exit polls for the Lok Sabha elections to come out, the Congress on Friday said it would be boycotting all exit poll debates.

Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera wrote on social media platform X that the party “will not participate in the debates on exit polls.”

He added, “Voters have cast their votes and their verdict has been secured. The results will be out on 4th June. Prior to that, we do not see any reason to indulge in speculation and slugfest for TRP.”

He further said, “The purpose of any debate should be to inform the people. We will happily partake in debates from 4th June onwards.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president J P Nadda said that Congress’s decision was an “unequivocal confirmation that the Congress has conceded the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.” He also urged voters to not “waste their votes” on the party in the last phase of the elections to be held on Saturday (June 1).

He added, “But what is more disconcerting is Congress’s antipathy towards the largest democratic process in the world, which saw participation of over 960 million aspirations… Now by deciding to boycott the Exit Poll exercise, they are bringing in question exercise carried out by several professional agencies, who have worked with thousands of associates to bring what people may have voted for. Is it the Congress’s arguments that there is a big conspiracy, which includes millions of voters, and all of it is aimed at ridiculing the Congress for the next few days, when the actual result comes out on 4th of June? It doesn’t behove India’s grand old party to behave like a child, whose toy has been taken away. One expects certain level of maturity from the largest political party in the Opposition.”

As voting in the last phase of Lok Sabha polls 2024 draws to a close on Saturday (June 1), all eyes will be on the exit polls, which will give an idea of how India voted in the 18th general elections.

The exit poll results will start coming in after 6 pm on June 1 (Saturday). The counting of votes and result declaration will take place on June 4 (Tuesday).

Exit polls give an indication about how people voted in an election. They are arrived at on the basis of interviews with voters right after they exit the polling stations. Apart from this, other calculations related to voter data are also considered.

A large number of Indians give the same importance to exit polls as they do to the actual results.

Exit polls in India are conducted by a number of organisations, often in tie-ups with media organisations. The surveys can be conducted face to face or online.
