Governance important, not single or double engine: Naveen Patnaik says after BJD victory in Jharsuguda

Odisha CM and BJD chief said that the Jharsuguda poll win has show that pro-people governance always wins, and "single or double engine" is not important.

"Girls are our pride," Patnaik said after slain Odisha minister Naba Kishore Das' 26-year-old daughter won the Jharsuguda by-poll by a large margin. "The opposition parties had insulted both Barsha Singh Bariha who won the Padampur by-election and also spoke ill about Dipali Das, who won in Jharsuguda. Girls are our pride. With Synshar Lyngdoh Thaba’s victory from Meghalaya’s Sohiong constituency, regional party United Democratic Party has successfully doubled its tally since 2018 to 12 seats in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

The lowest votes have been clocked in by the BJP’s Serapth Eric Kharbuki with just 40 votes or 0.12% of the vote share.

The result does not have any significant impact on the Meghalaya government which was formed following state elections earlier this year as the UDP is already part of the ruling coalition in the state along with the National People’s Party, People’s Democratic Front, Hill State People’s Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party; with two cabinet ministers. Even in the last term, it was an ally in the NPP-led coalition government.

In final assault on Azam Khan's Rampur fortress, BJP ally Apna Dal defeats SP in Suar

The ruling BJP-led coalition ended Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan's over four-decade dominance in Rampur with its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) winning the Suar assembly by-election by a margin of 8,724 votes.

Shafeek Ahmed Ansari of the Anupriya Patel-headed Apna Dal (Sonelal) secured a little over 50 per cent of the total votes polled in the bypoll.

With this victory, the ruling coalition ended Azam Khan's over four-decade hold in the Muslim-dominated Rampur district. Azam Khan and his family watched the poll outcome on TV at their Jail Road residence. Of the five assembly constituencies under Rampur Lok Sabha seat, Bilaspur, Rampur and Milak-SC are held by the BJP. Chamrau is held by SP and Suar has been clinched by BJP's ally Apna Dal (Sonelal).

The Rampur parliamentary constituency, also a stronghold of Azam Khan, was won by the BJP. SP's Muslim face from the days of Mulayam Singh Yadav, Azam Khan remained undefeated in Rampur Sadar assembly seat since 1980 irrespective of the party in power.
In November 2022, Azam Khan's name was removed from the electoral roll in Rampur after he was convicted in a 2019 hate speech case. As a result, he could not cast his vote in the by-election in Suar.

In February 2023, Abdullah Azam Khan's name was struck off the electoral roll after his disqualification from the legislative assembly. A Moradabad court had sentenced him to two years in jail in a 15-year old case. (PTI)

A recap: Suar records over 44.95% polling, Chhanbey 44.15%

As the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) stays away from the bypolls focusing on the urban local body elections, the bypolls on Suar and Chhanbey seats are seeing a close contest between BJP’s ally Apna Dal(S) and the SP. Though the Congress has fielded a candidate in Chhanbey, it did not contest in Suar.  A total of 14 candidates are in the fray— six in Suar and eight in Chhanbey.

The Suar seat was held by Abdullah Azam Khan, the son of senior SP leader Azam Khan, and it was declared vacant on February 13 after a Moradabad court sentenced him to two years in jail in a 15-year-old case. This time, SP has fielded Anuradha Chauhan, a lawyer. With the support of Azam, Chauhan is giving a tough fight to her rival Shafiq Ahmed Ansari of Apna Dal(Sonelal).

In the SC-reserved Chhanbey constituency, the bypoll was necessitated after the death of sitting Apna Dal (S) MLA Rahul Prakash Kol. The party fielded his wife Rinki Kol, hoping to retain the seat on sympathy voting. Here the fight was between the Apna Dal (S) and the SP. The SP, on the other hand, has once again put its trust in Kirti Kol, who had unsuccessfully contested the seat against Rahul Prakash Kol in 2022.
