As tensions continued to simmer in Manipur’s Jiribam, over a hundred trucks carrying essential supplies between the district and state capital Imphal were stopped on National Highway 37 on Monday by a group of women belonging to the Kuki-Zo community as they began an indefinite blockade.
NH 37 is one of Manipur’s two important lifelines, and connects Imphal with Assam.
The trucks were stopped in Tamenglong district, around five kilometres from Jiribam district headquarters.
According to the Kuki Women Union of Jiribam and Tamenglong, the indefinite roadblock on NH 37, being carried by Kuki-Zo Village Volunteers from Vangailhang and Tuilangkol, was a counter to the blockade imposed by the Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol and the Meira Paibis. It also comes days after vehicles carrying construction materials were torched in separate incidents at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district and Umathel in Kakching district. The materials had been meant for Kuki-Zo settlements.
While the trucks that were stopped Monday, including some petroleum tankers, were escorted by central forces on their way to Imphal, they were forced to return to Jiribam district headquarters. ENS
