The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday attacked the Bihar government for scheduling training sessions for teachers during Navratri holidays, starting October 15. The BJP demanded the government to postpone the training and also sought to know if it “would dare to do so during the month of Ramzan”. Mahagathbandhan ally Congress party also asked the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to withdraw the order for fear of “being called anti-Hindu” by the Opposition.

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) on October 10 had issued an order for holding training sessions for teachers till October 21, three days before the conclusion of the 10-day Durga Puja festival on October 24. The SCERT had issued a letter for middle school language teachers (Class 6-8) of Hindi, English and Urdu to start training from October 15 to October 20, when the schools in the state are closed for the festival. The government order was for teachers of eight districts including Banka, Munger, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Kishanganj, Purnia, Rohtas and Samastipur.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP and former deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi said, “We wonder how Bihar government took such a decision. Can they dare do such a thing during Ramzan? Nitish Kumar government has been engaged in Muslim appeasement as there are schools which have its weekly off on Friday instead of Sunday. We want immediate withdrawal of the government order as several teachers could observe Navratri fast”. The MP added the state government should remember how it had to withdraw its order of slashing holidays during Durga Puja, Janmashtami and Raksha Bandhan this September amid protests from several political parties.

In what may well be embarrassing for CM Nitish Kumar is ally Congress also demanding a recall of the order. Bihar Congress spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari, in a letter to the Bihar CM, wrote: “As some teachers would be observing Durga Puja, training session during the puja would not be good, more so when the Opposition BJP would try to dub the state government as anti-Hindu” and could attempt “polarisation”. A JDU leader, however, said: “The training is rotational, involving a small number of teachers. But it is entirely the government’s call to go with its order or recall it.”
