'Passing signal at danger' by DEMU (diesel electric multiple unit) goods train seems to be the reason behind the accident, as per the preliminary assessment by railway authorities.

A detailed inquiry into the incident will be conducted at the level of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to ascertain the exact cause and recommend necessary corrective actions.

The death toll in the train collision near Bilaspur railway station has risen to eight, an official said. Two to three passengers are still trapped under a coach of the train.

Due to the derailment of MEMU local train between Getora and Bilaspur station, some trains were cancelled.

TMC Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee said, "Deeply pained by the tragic train collision on the Bilaspur–Howrah route that led to the derailment of multiple coaches and, tragically, loss of precious lives."

"My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families during this hour of irreparable loss. Praying for the swift recovery of those injured and strength for all affected to endure this tragedy," he added.

Owing to the train collision on Tuesday evening, the timings of some trains operating in the Bilaspur Division of South East Central Railway have been rescheduled.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sorrow over the news of the train accident near Bilaspur. On his instructions, railway and district administration teams immediately engaged in relief and rescue operations. All necessary resources and medical assistance are being ensured for the treatment of the injured, the CMO said on X.

"The CM stated that the state government stands with the affected families during this difficult time. He expressed his deepest condolences to the passengers who lost their lives in the accident and prayed to God to grant patience to their families during this tragic time and for the speedy recovery of the injured. The state government is monitoring the situation with utmost diligence and sensitivity," the CMO added.

A detailed inquiry will be conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to ascertain the cause and recommend preventive measures," the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of South East Central Railway said.

An ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 5 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for passengers with minor injuries will be provided, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of South East Central Railway announced.

At least five people were killed after a passenger train collided with a goods train near Bilaspur station in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday evening, Bilaspur collector Sanjay Agrawal said.

The goods train's last bogie dashed into the passenger train's first bogie.

Four passengers were still trapped under a coach of the passenger train, the official confirmed.
